'Abstract This study focuses on the fantasy film genre with singular films and film series serving as its triggers. The genre of fantasy is a grand mythology of works that has put its mark on literature in the forms of novels, poems and the performing arts like theatres, operas. Video games have also gained significant renown through the fantasy genre. Cinema is rapidly increasing its assertion in society with fantasy films. Some examples can be named as The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Peter Jackson, 2001) and Avatar (James Cameron, 2009) which won many important awards like the Academy Awards. This study will enlighten the subject of the fantasy film genre by underlining many key facts and agents to its stature, demand and success. This study has been generated and compiled with the usage of the descriptive method of research and writing. As this study is a film topic, it was important to describe scenes and stories in films for the better understanding of its cause. Reading writings about film, film genres and the fantasy film genre have been crucial in the shaping of the ideas and perspectives presented in this study. In the past years, there is an increasing number of publications on the fantasy film genre and these publications were carefully read and analysed before the formation of this study. Watching films of the fantasy film genre have been integral to the development of this study. With this study being a film topic, it was only natural to watch films of the fantasy film genre and generate viewpoints on the dominance of the productions of the fantasy film genre in today's cinema. Explanations and analyses have been vital in the writing process of this study. As the world of the fantasy film genre is vast with numerous elements, it was important to explain and analyse the surreal and supernatural elements of the fantasy film genre and its productions.
