'Abstract Contamination of coastal aquifers by sea water is either due to the excess amount of pumping above their safe yield capacity or due to local causes like over pumping near the shores (even without excess amount of pumping at the scale of the whole aquifer) or both. This problem, which is known as salt water intrusion in the literature, is faced frequently if the coastal aquifers are mainly over pumped for irrigation purposes. In this study, the water budget of the Güzelyurt coastal aquifer is studied. The amount of water that is utilized continuously within the aquifers is calculated through volumetric (3D) approaches. In this approach, both the water balance and the salt balance equations are integrated in space and in time. The inverse methodology is used for the determination of poorly known terms in time and space. The variation contours showing the water table levels and concentrations of NaCl have been drawn for the last 20 years. The unknown component of the water balance equation, that is the extraction of water from this aquifer by the South Cyprus, is calculated as 8.0 Million cubic meters per year (MCM/yr). A program named GFLOW-U1 was used to solve the general flow equation in unconfined aquifers. The average amount of water that is pumped above the safe yield capacity, thus causing the depletion of the saturated volume of the aquifer, is estimated as 17/4 MCM/yr. Based on that, the total amount of remaining fresh water volume available within the aquifer is found to be 1565 MCM. Hence, the remaining lifetime of the aquifer is estimated not more than 90 years. The presently adopted coastal aquifer management practice is highly inefficient. The volumetric variations of saturated aquifer through effective precipitation data (extrapolated from the 50 years average monthly precipitation values) coupled with different pumping scenarios were obtained. The water table contours of different years (2005, 2030 and 2050) were also drawn. To improve the available aquifers management appropriate precautions and recommendations are stated. Özet Kıyı bölgesindeki aküferlerin deniz suyu tarafından kirletilmesi, ya aküferden emniyetli çekimin üzerindeki su çekimleri ile ya da deniz kıyısına yakın kısımlardaki (bütün akifer için fazla çekim olmasa dahi ) aşırı pompaj gibi yerel sebeplerle veya herikisinden olur. Literatürde tuzlu su girişimi olarak bilinen bu probleme, özellikle kıyı aküferlerinden sulama suyu temini için aşırı çekim yapıldığında çok sık rastlanır. Bu çalışmada, Güzelyurt kıyı aküferlerinin su bütçesi incelemiştir. Aküferdeki devamlı olarak kullanılan su (3 boyutta) hacimsel yaklaşım ile hesaplandı. Bu yaklaşımda hem su bütçesi (su sürekliliği) hem de tuz bütçesi denklemleri yere ve zamana göre integre edilerek kullanıldı. Zaman ve yere göre yaklaşık değerleri belirsiz olan büyüklükler ters yöntem ile elde edildi. Son 20 yıla ait su seviye eş yükselti eğrileri ve NaCL eş konsantrasyon eğrileri çizildi. Su bütçesinin bilinmeyen bileşeni olan aküferin Güney Kıbrıs\'ta kalan kısmından çekilen su miktarı 8.0 milyon metreküp/ yıl (MMK/yıl) olarak bulundu. Serbest aküferdeki genel akım denklemini çözmek için GFLOW-U1 olarak adlandırılan bilgisayar programı kullanıldı. Aküferin doymuş hacmindeki azalmaya sebep olan emniyetli çekimin üzerindeki ortalama çekim miktarı 17.4 MMK/yıl olarak bulundu. Bu değerlere dayanarak, aküferde kalan su hacmi 1565 MMK olarak hesaplandı. Buradan aküferin kalan ömrünün 90 yılı geçmeyeceği tahmin edilmiştir. Uygulanan mevcut sahil aküfer işletme yöntemi çok verimsizdir. Değişik çekim senaryoları için etkin yağış verilerine dayanarak (50 yılın aylık ortalama değerlerinden uzatılarak) hesaplanan aküferin doygun hacminin değişimleri elde edildi. Farklı yıllar (2005, 2030 ve 2050) için su seviye eş yükselti eğrileri de çizildi. Aküferin verimli işletimi için gerekli önlemler ve öneriler belirtildi. ' |
