| Özet notu | ABSTRACT The civil war which began in 2011 has become a protracted and intractable conflict which the international community is yet to resolve. The Syrian Civil war has seen several actors and the failure of the UN Security Council to proffer solution to the crises in Syria have made the world to see the power struggle in the council. This study aims to investigate Syrian civil war and the reasons behind the intractability of the conflict. This study is exploratory and non-experimental which thoroughly looks into the Syrian civil war. The theoretical framework of Edward Azar on 'Protracted Social Conflict Theory' which views conflicts as an outcome of political and structural inequalities and the denial of basic human right to communities and groups by those in power was considered in this study to explain the complexity and intractability of the war which began in 2011. The outcome of the study showed that finding a solution that would be accepted by such a multiple and heterogeneous composition of actors has proven elusive even to season diplomats and mediators. The veracity of Azar's theory of protracted social conflict was also discovered to be the most appropriate theoretical framework to understand the intractability of the Syrian civil war. The key in solving the Syrian conflict no longer reside in just a solution between the Assad Regime and the Syrian opposition but also a solution that is acceptable to various external state actors.
