Özet notu ABSTRACT The study aimed at comparing the production of bioethanol from Cassava root (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and Cocoyam (colocasia esculenta) collected from Tonkolili District, Magbass village in Sierra Leone. Presently the amount of bioethanol that is produce in Sierra Leone stands at 85million litters per year as of 2020 which is not enough to sustain the growing population and hence call for additional agricultural sources such as cassava and cocoyam that could be used to add the supply of bioethanol. In Sierra Leone, 4,761,385 and 2,576 tons of cassava and cocoyam respectively are being produced annually. Of these amounts about 60% ends up in dumping sites since only a little part of the population consume them. Estimate of ethanol to be produce if 60% of the total annual produce is used: Cassava is 52,108,597 gallons and Cocoyam is 25,224 gallons. The results showed that the two crop residues produced bioethanol under dilute acid hydrolysis with cassava producing the highest amount of ethanol in all concentrations of 25.86g/L for 1%, 47.86g/L for 2% and 64g/L for 4% acid hydrolysis. In a nut shell, these food crops are good potentials for bioethanol production and if utilized in Sierra Leone it will solve the aspect of wastage of the crop, boast the fuel sector, increase employment as more of the crop will be cultivated and also solve the issue of global fuel prices and environmental degradation. The two crops are a good venture to combat the environmental pollution posed by fossil fuel and also the fuel produced by these farm produce are cleaner and more cheaper when compared to fossil fuel.
