Özet notu ABSTRACT This thesis evaluates the influence of Aid, good governance (GG), health insurance (HI) and sustainable environment on quality of life (QoL) in some selected sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries using a panel data from 2000 to 2018 and applying statistical estimation techniques including GMM, Granger Causality, Feasible Generalized Least Squares, Bias-corrected Least Square Dummy Variables, Instrumental Variable 2 Stage Least Squares and Panels Corrected Standard Errors. SSA region was decomposed into oil producing countries (OPC) and non-oil producing countries (NPC) as well as low income countries (LIC) and middle income countries (MIC) to allow for comparison and relevant conclusions in terms of dynamics that exist in each of the groupings. The findings prove that GG has negative relationship with CO2 emissions in SSA countries. OPC maintain GG systems to control CO2 emissions as compared to NPC. GG and sustainable development (SD) have robust positive relationship with quality of life (QoL) in SSA countries in aggregate. The relationship between SD and QoL is negative in both LIC and MIC. GG have negative relationship with incidence of malaria in both OPC and NPC in SSA. In addition the thesis found that official development assistance (ODA) in general and global fund (GF) in particular have a significant negative impact on QoL in the SSA context. But in the case of OPC GF has positive association with QoL. The findings also prove that ODA has a negative impact on QoL in LIC and MIC but insignificant for LIC. The results also show that health insurance (HI) improves health outcomes and QoL only when it is applied under GG systems. The findings imply that strong and effective governance regime is very important for human development in Africa. Again irrespective of the quantum of foreign donations given to the African people, this has done little to improve their QoL. Assistance given by foreign donors to the African people can have the desired impact on human life and development only when there is effective and efficient governance practices. Also, GG is critical in fighting the malaria disease but could only have positive impact on QoL of in the region when it is applied under efficient governance systems. Though several African countries have taken steps in improving health status through accessible and affordable healthcare systems such as HI schemes for inexpensive health care financing, this will only impact on QoL under strong governance regime devoid of corruption and misappropriation.
