Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>This dissertation, by analysing documentary films, aims to outline the purpose of reconciliation between two ethnic communities in Cyprus – namely Turkish and Greek Cypriots – who have experienced serious conflicts for many years. Although there are differences in terms of language and religion, the cultural and social backgrounds of the communities have many similarities. However, the atmosphere on the island gradually changed due to the involvement of politics in daily life, which created two poles. The period that began with the 1974 war and ended with the opening of the crossings in 2003, unfortunately did not pave the way to completely revealing Cypriocentric discourse and reconciliation aspects. This dissertation on documentary filmmaking and reconciliation in Cyprus specifically focuses on the production histories, analyses and the distribution of the documentaries produced in the period that witnessed the total separation of the two ethnic communities in the island through examining the stages as thematic analyses within their respective periods. The documentaries that are within the limitations of this dissertation were categorised into three separate periods. Cyprus: The Other Reality (1976), A Detail in Cyprus (1987) and Our Wall (1993) categorized as documentaries from 1974 to 2000. Then, Parallel Trips (2003) and Voice of Blood (2004) documentaries were studied under referendum-era documentaries. Finally, Sharing an Island (2011) and Birds of a Feather (2012) documentaries categorized as post-referendum documentaries. The interviews with the producer and directors of these documentaries shaped the route of the dissertation and I managed to point out all positive and negative aspects of these broadcasts within the periods they were produced. Focusing on the effects of the 1974 war and the displacement issue are other common findings of selected documentaries in this work. Examining reconciliation amongst two ethnic communities and the will for unification within the historical period of time are strongly presented in all documentaries in which some of them suppressed for several years by Greek Cypriot authorities. The suppression in this respect is another finding in this dissertation which easily refers how political barriers appear in Cyprus. As this dissertation mainly got its power from personal interviews, the directors, producers and the production teams were interviewed expressed the difficulties of the production processes, and then the distribution of their broadcasts. |
