Özet notu ABSTRACT Road traffic accident, across the world, is regarded as a global situation and it has been recently ranked as the 11th leading cause of death globally and 7th in Libya. In an attempt to solve this problem, the study evaluates road traffic accidents in the city of Fezzan, Libya by analyzing the current state of the city in terms of road traffic accidents. This was achieved by conducting a pilot survey to determine the best area of study and participants, and also by obtaining data and analyzing data to determine the root cause of the problems within the city, measure the extent of these problems and seek a sustainable solution and proffer recommendation based on the result obtained from the study. Major data used within this study were primary and secondary data; the primary data was obtained through a structured questionnaire having demographic, qualitative and qualitative sections for responses. The secondary data was obtained from the Libya Traffic Authority. Upon complete collection of these data, the qualitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics within the SPSS statistical software; while the qualitative data was analyzed through reading, rereading, comparison, categorization and interpretation. For the quantitative analysis, it was observed that most of the respondents were conversant with the area of research with 90% of them being familiar with the issue. 66% of the respondents agree that poor maintenance was responsible for accidents, while others thought otherwise as to other factors. Almost all the respondents (96%) agree that the roads in Fezzan are bad. 76% of the respondents also agreed that there is a high rate of accidents in the area. 60% of the respondents feel that upgrading the highways will minimize the accidents while others felt otherwise as to other factors. Also, 58% of respondents suggested that reconstruction would be required to fix the roads, while others thought otherwise as to other factors. 68% of the respondents felt the roads were hardly maintained. 56% of the respondents think that the traffic in Fezzan is high. 80% of the respondents feel that the government policies on roads are not responsive or inadequate. 86% of the respondents felt unsafe on Fezzan roads and 74% felt that the levels of service were poor and needed improvement. 60% of the respondents feel that reviving the public transit system will help reduce crashes. 88% think that the laws governing highways are adequate but need proper implementation. Also, the data obtained from the Libyan Transport Authority showed that accidents have been on the rise since 2014. and 2020 The numbers of persons affected by accidents have also increased within this time.
