Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>Erythrina senegalensis, the Senegal coral tree is a plant which belongs to the family<br/>of Fabaceae and it has been used by traditional healers to treat many ailments and<br/>infections in African traditional medicine. There is a growing concern about the<br/>scourge of diseases caused by excessive free radicals in the body and lack of<br/>standardization of medicinal herbal products. Therefore, this research is aimed at<br/>evaluating the chemical, antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of the extract. The<br/>powdered stem bark was evaluated for its pharmacognostic profiles and then<br/>extracted successively using maceration method with methanol as solvent. The<br/>extract obtained was concentrated using rotary evaporator. AgNPs was characterized<br/>with the following machine such as UV/VIS, FTIR, SEM, and XRD. The extracts<br/>were screened for their phytochemical constituents using standard protocols. The thin<br/>layer chromatography (TLC) profiles of the resulting extracts were determined using<br/>suitable solvent systems and the retention factor (Rf) values of separated spots of<br/>compounds were calculated. The antioxidant (free radical scavenging) activity of the<br/>extracts were measured using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1- picryl hydrazyl) and hydrogen<br/>peroxide with ascorbic acid used as standard. The results were expressed in terms of<br/>percentage inhibition. The preliminary phytochemical screening of the extracts<br/>revealed the presence of tannins, phenol, saponins, flavonoids and Alkaloids. The<br/>free radical scavenging activity of the extracts revealed higher activity with decrease<br/>in concentration in the nanoparticles compared to Methanol extract when DPPH was<br/>used while reverse was the case when hydrogen peroxide was used. Also, except in<br/>salmonella, antimicrobial Activity is higher in the nanoparticles compared with the<br/>methanol extract. The results indicated that the extracts contain secondary<br/>metabolites which may be responsible for the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity<br/>demonstrated by the extract of E. sengalensis and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with<br/>the plant mediated AgNPs found to also suppress the proliferation of multidrugresistant<br/>S. aureus. |
