| Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>The International community especially in the UN resolutions have repeatedly endorsed<br/>the importance of engaging women in post-conflict peacebuilding in states recovering<br/>from conflicts. While it is unarguable that post-conflict states cannot effectively attain<br/>sustainable peace unless women are included and engaged in the process of peacebuilding;<br/>yet, it remains surprising that the clarion call by the international community to engage<br/>women in the processes of peacebuilding has not yielded the desired results in postconflict<br/>states particularly in Africa where women are constantly ignored in formal peace<br/>negotiation processes. Accordingly, the question this thesis intends to address is: To what<br/>extent can a post-conflict state that ignores women in the process of sustainable peace be<br/>able to guarantee the safety of its citizens? This thesis examines this question in the context<br/>of the role of women in the peace negotiation processes in post-war Sierra Leone. It should<br/>be noted that during the Sierra Leonean civil war that lasted between 1991-2002, women<br/>played an active role in ceasing the war, however, in the post-war era, they were<br/>principally ignored in the political and peacebuilding negotiation processes making the<br/>post-war Sierra Leone gender insensitive whilst re-instituting "the physical and structural<br/>gender-based violence against women" during the war era. Using the conceptual<br/>framework of human security this thesis argues that the non-engagement of women in the<br/>formal peace negotiation processes, whose abilities are tremendous and indispensable for<br/>sustainable peacebuilding is an abnormality that would constantly pose multiple<br/>challenges to Sierra Leone and may in turn result in unsustainable peacebuilding processes<br/>and impede the actualization of the Millennium Development Goals through a resurgence<br/>of violence if thoughtful efforts are not taken to rectify this issue. |
