Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>The study in your hand was carried out by analyzing speech acts in conversational<br/>dialogues in Turkish EFL high school textbooks. Its primary purpose is to provide<br/>theoretical data on the effective use of the concept of speech act, which is the basic<br/>unit of communicative, operational, and situational approaches, which has been used<br/>significantly in English second language teaching books since the 1980s, with a<br/>systematic approach and effective in teaching English as a foreign language. The thesis<br/>consists of a total of 5 chapters. In the first chapter, general information about the idea<br/>is given. These are the background of the study, the problem situation, the aim of the<br/>study, the research questions, the importance of the study, and the study’s limitations.<br/>The second part includes the concepts related to the study survey. These are the<br/>definition of textbooks and types of textbooks, the importance of textbooks in foreign<br/>language classes, the adverse effects of using textbooks, the importance of evaluating<br/>textbooks, speech acts, and types of speech acts. The research model, data source, data<br/>collection, and data analysis are included in the third section. In the fourth chapter, six<br/>research questions were answered. Searle's speech act classification, explanations of<br/>five speech act types, and then speech act sentences which analysed in Turkish EFL<br/>high school textbooks, and the speech act sentences where 9th grade, 10th grade and<br/>11th-grade books are given in the tables. Six research questions were answered. Then,<br/>in the fourth chapter, the frequency and percentage of speech act usage in these books<br/>are shown in tables and figures. Chapter 5 contains the conclusion and<br/>recommendations for future research. The finding of the study revealed that the<br/>expressive speech acts, directive speech acts, representative speech acts, and<br/>commissive speech acts were used in conversational dialogues in high school<br/>textbooks in Turkey. Of the five speech act types, only declarations speech acts did<br/>not appear in the three high school textbooks. Our analysis showed that the most used<br/>speech act was the directive speech act, with 67 uses in the 9th-grade textbook, 47 uses<br/>in the 10th-grade textbook, and 62 in the conversational dialogues in the 11th-grade<br/>textbook, with a total of 176 uses.<br/>Keywords: Speech Acts, Textbooks Evaluation, Turkish EFL High School<br/>Textbooks. |
