| Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>African international students have become an integral part of the Turkish Cypriot <br/>community, yet there has not been literature on the challenges they encounter during <br/>their stay in the host country. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence <br/>that acculturative stress and a negative social support have on alcohol use among the <br/>African international students in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. A sample <br/>of 380 students enrolled in diverse degree and diploma programs from 2 major <br/>universities in the city of Lefkosa participated in the study. Data collection was done <br/>using questionnaires assessing their acculturation, social support, and alcohol use. A <br/>descriptive cross sectional design was used. Analysis of the data was done by use of <br/>the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Pearson correlation, regression<br/>analysis, and ANOVA were mostly used. The results revealed that acculturative stress <br/>had no positive influence to alcohol use whereas, social support had a positive <br/>influence on the alcohol use by international students. The final regression model<br/>however, revealed that when combined both acculturative stress and social support are <br/>predictors of alcohol use as shown by the adjusted R squared (R2 = 0.652) meaning <br/>students suffering from acculturative stress and at the same time have a negative social <br/>support tend to have a higher alcohol use consumption rate. Recommendations are for <br/>universities to commit to increasing acculturation and social support among foreign <br/>students in an effort to decrease alcohol use and improve their mental health as well <br/>as providing experienced counsellors and social workers to assist students in a way <br/>that improves their wellbeing. It is important that further study examines the <br/>correlation between the same variables that have been used in this study for other <br/>ethnic groups of students in North Cyprus. It would be beneficial if replications of this <br/>study are also done by use of qualitative methods which involve the collection and <br/>analysing of non-numerical data in a way that helps understand the opinions and <br/>experiences of the participants in more detail.<br/>Key words: Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, Alcohol Use, International Students, <br/>Support |
