| Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>In Addis Ababa, urban parks serve a significant function as a social place where <br/>communities participate in religious, cultural, and political events. However, due to <br/>various factors, their function as urban parks is seriously threatened. The two main <br/>problems in this context are "that there are not enough urban parks for public use" and <br/>"the existing parks are not adequately managed." The study assessed the physical <br/>problems and challenges of urban parks in Addis Ababa in terms of effectiveness and <br/>sufficiency to identify areas for improvement and solutions. Thereby, this research was <br/>undertaken as a case study focusing on Janmeda and Entoto Park. Primary data were <br/>collected from site visits, personal observations, and issue-related photos. Secondary <br/>data were collected from Addis Ababa government agencies, books, websites, <br/>photographs, and other sources. Illustrative figures, tables, and descriptive texts <br/>presented the collected data and reviewed documents.<br/>The park per capita data showed that there are not enough parks in the city to meet the<br/>needs of the population, resulting in 2.89 m2. This is well below most developed <br/>countries (20 m2), WHO (9 m2), and African Green Index (GIA) (7 m2) standards. <br/>Within the framework of the study carried out at Janmeda and Entoto parks, the <br/>research depicted that, like most parks in Addis Ababa, Janmeda park is facing serious <br/>problems related to its physical and operational attributes, despite its importance <br/>throughout history. However, Entoto Park's design of amenities, management, and <br/>safety are a good start and can set an example for future park developments in the city.<br/>The research suggests renovating and restoring the existing urban parks by <br/>incorporating their physical, historic, cultural, and natural features to solve the above <br/>issues.
