| Özet notu | ABSTRACT<br/>The rationale of this study is to investigate the extent to which the UN contributes to <br/>conflict resolution in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In this view, the study <br/>involved secondary research by reviewing related studies such as seminar papers, <br/>reports, published and unpublished works, television interviews, and conferences with <br/>political leaders and conflict resolution specialists, as well as other related published <br/>sources on conflict resolution and management, the United Nations, and the role or <br/>contribution of MONUC-MONUSCO in peacekeeping in the DRC. The study places <br/>itself under the scope of protracted social theory by Edward Azar, which states that <br/>conflicts arise when communities are deprived of basic needs on the basis of <br/>communal identity. However, the study discovers that the causes of the DRC conflict <br/>are colonial legacies, Mobutu's poorly centralized administration, the presence of <br/>natural resources in Congo, and neighboring countries' interests and occupation that <br/>had serious consequences and was the worst humanitarian disaster since World War <br/>II. The findings of this research demonstrate that MONUC-MONUSCO, the United <br/>Nations peacekeeping mission, has implemented a variety of policies and methods to <br/>improve its peacekeeping operations. Despite the fact that there are numerous actions <br/>focused on maintaining peace with significant successful operations, the United <br/>Nations continues to encounter problems and obstacles that have adversely affected <br/>the efficacy and success of its peacekeeping missions. Therefore, the study concludes <br/>that the United Nations failed to successfully resolve the DRC's 20-year conflict. In <br/>order to enhance peacekeeping missions and build long-term peace in the DRC, the <br/>research highlights the necessity of institutional and policy changes, along with <br/>promises from parties, institutions, and involved players. In addition, the DRC <br/>government, sub-regional agreements, and other international players must all work <br/>together to guarantee a peaceful resolution and a definitive end to the DRC conflict, <br/>indicating that this is not just the UN's duty.<br/>Keywords: Conflict; Conflict Resolution; DRC; MONUC; MONUSCO; United <br/>Nations |
