Özet notu | ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to examine the influence of intrinsic employee motivation
and extrinsic employee motivation on healthcare workers’ performance: a mediating
variable of employee engagement in Lagos, State, Nigeria. This research will be
focusing on the following specific objectives, to examine the influence of intrinsic
motivation on healthcare performance in Akoka Primary Healthcare Center, Lagos,
Nigeria; to determine the influence of extrinsic motivation on healthcare worker’s
performance in Akoka Primary Healthcare Center, Lagos, Nigeria; to check if the
relationship between intrinsic motivation and health care worker’s performance is
mediated by employee’s engagement, and to see if the relationship between extrinsic
motivation and healthcare worker’s performance is mediated by employee’s
engagement in Akoka Primary Healthcare Center, Lagos, Nigeria. By intrinsic
motivation, we mean the kind of motivation that is self-produced to fulfill three inborn
mental requirements: in particular requirements for independence, capability, and
relatedness (Deci & Ryan, 2000). According to Adam et. al., (2007), examples of
employee’s intrinsic motivations are personal growth, advancement, responsibility,
recognition, achievement, satisfaction among others. While extrinsic employee’s
motivation (EEM) is also described as that used by transactional leaders in such a way
that a contingent award is employed to control worker’s motivation to keep on
working, which is probably going to diminish intrinsic motivation (Deci & Ryan,
1985). More so, some examples of extrinsic motivations are salary or wages, status,
job security, benefits, organization policy and interpersonal relations (Adam et. al.,
2007).
The descriptive survey method was used and a questionnaire was used as the research
instrument. In the analyses, the simple percentage technique and regression analysis
was applied to analyze the questionnaires using statistical package for social sciences
(SPSS).
Therefore, the result demonstrates that extrinsic employee motivation plays a
significant role in healthcare workers’ performance (HWP) in Lagos State healthcare
center, Nigeria. Additionally, the study demonstrates that employee engagement has
an impact on healthcare workers’ performance (HWP). This demonstrates that
healthcare workers in Lagos state of Nigeria tends to be motivated to perform
excellently well if and only if they are being rewarded extrinsically such as good salary
and wages payment, free meals, allowances, and accommodation among others.
Keywords: Employee Engagement; Extrinsic Motivation; Healthcare Worker
Performance; Intrinsic Motivation. |
