| Özet notu | ABSTRACT <br/>The study examined the influence of Facebook political campaign hate speech on <br/>voting decision of electorate in Nigeria. Guiding the study were three research <br/>objectives and questions, based on which a structured research questionnaire was <br/>formulated and distributed to 250 respondents, selected using homogeneous <br/>convenient sampling in which only respondents who are within the voting age group. <br/>The findings made from the study revealed that to a great extent political campaign<br/>hate speech carried out on Facebook influence voting decision in Nigeria. Several <br/>factors were found to influence hate-speeches on Facebook such as Global increase <br/>in Political/tribal alignments, Lack of policies to guide on online freedom of <br/>expression, ethics and privacy, Proximity to conflict, learning to hate, breakdown of <br/>positive norms/values, and Lack of accountability. Several suggestions were put <br/>forward on how political hate-speeches on Facebook can be controlled, and these <br/>includes legal recourse, immediate review of hateful speech report, removal of hate <br/>speech materials, development and implementation of media and information literacy <br/>programmes, and restriction or outright ban of hate speech activities. Based on the <br/>findings created, this study concludes that Facebook political campaign hate speech <br/>encompasses a vital influence on the option call of voters. Hate speeches as <br/>discovered by the study is motor-assisted by factors like increase political <br/>alignments, absence of policies guiding on-line freedom of expression and privacy, <br/>breakdown of positive norms/values, and Lack of answerability. The study <br/>recommended that rather than engage in the spread of political hate speech, issuebased campaign should be carried out by political party in order to provide the <br/>electorates with the latitude to make their choices among contending political <br/>aspirants during election.<br/>Keywords: Social Media, Hate Speech, Facebook, Agenda-Setting Theory |
