ABSTRACT<br/>Cities across the globe are constantly evolving and expanding, often facing challenging <br/>circumstances such as war, conflict, and political upheaval. Public spaces are a critical <br/>component of urban structure but are significantly impacted by these circumstances. <br/>Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, confronts various issues, including population growth, <br/>urban destruction, social disengagement, and limited connections to nature and the <br/>environment. <br/>The thesis explores the impact of post-war and ongoing conflict circumstances on urban <br/>public spaces. It investigates the role of urban design and revitalisation strategies in <br/>addressing these issues. Revitalising public spaces in Mogadishu can have multiple <br/>benefits, such as promoting social engagement, enhancing the quality of life, and fostering <br/>physical development.<br/>In light of developing criteria for revitalising urban spaces, the thesis examines wellknown cases in cities that have faced similar challenges, such as Beirut, Sarajevo, Belfast, <br/>and Monrovia. Based on the researchers’ perspectives of these cities’ squares, the thesis <br/>derives a set of theoretical criteria applied to revitalising public squares in Mogadishu as <br/>a primary case study.<br/>In conclusion, this thesis highlights the importance of urban design and revitalisation <br/>strategies in addressing the challenges urban public spaces face in post-war and ongoing <br/>conflict situations. The revitalisation of public squares in Mogadishu serves as an <br/>exemplary implementation of the developed criteria, ultimately improving the quality of <br/>life for its residents. <br/>Keywords: Mogadishu, Somalia, Post-war/conflicts, Public Spaces, Public Squares, <br/>Redevelopment Approaches, Revitalisation, Urban Design.<br/> |
