Özet notu | ABSTRACT
Cognitive ergonomics examines how cognitive functions impact human-system interactions. The absence of cognitive ergonomics at the workplace increases mental stress when employees are subjected to unpleasant working conditions. The study aimed to find the effect of cognitive workload and stress on the mental health and safety of employees in Nigeria's Banking, Logistics, and Oil & Gas industries. 241, 208 and 242 employees from these three industries respectively, were considered for the study using Lagos as its study area. A descriptive and correlational survey design
was adopted for this study, and the ordinary least squares estimation method was used to examine the selected objectives by considering cognitive factors; workload, work control, relationships, managerial support, roles, peer support and change. Pearson corelation and multiple regression statistical tools were used to analyze the data collected. The results showed that if the workload of employees is increased by 1%, the health and safety of employees in the Banking industry will deteriorate by 0.257%, while the health and safety of employees in the Logistics and Oil and Gas industries will improve by 0.015% and 0.017%, respectively. The results also revealed that if the work control employees had over their work is increased by 1%, the health and safety of employees in the Banking and Logistics industries would be improved by 0.152% and 0.025%, respectively, while the health and safety of employees in the Oil and Gas industry would deteriorate by 0.035%. The study concluded that employees within the Banking industry are overburdened with work and thus, employees' workload should be reduced by hiring more employees to assist them. The study also showed that the employees within the Banking and Oil and Gas industries do not have enough autonomy on their jobs and thus management should design employee-led initiatives to empower employees to use their skills to innovate and solve problems in line with
industry objectives.
Keywords: Banking industry, Cognitive ergonomics, Logistics industry, Mental Health and Safety, Oil and Gas industry |
