Özet notu Plant based therapy has been used as an important component in traditional medicine. Plant also serves as inspiration for medicinal agents used in the defense against various pathogenic infections and diseases. Schinus molle is an ornamental tree growing in the Mediterranean area that has been used as topical antioxidant and antibacterial agent. This study aims at evaluating the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of schinus molle L. extract on escherichia coli and staphylococcus aureus as well as determining the bioactive components contained in the plant. The methods employed are phytochemical analysis, antioxidant assay, antibacterial screening and MIC test. The phytochemicals indicated presence of alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids and anthraquinone. Other phytochemicals such as glycosides were absent. The qualitative antioxidant assay revealed the presence of antioxidant activity through the formation of yellow spot against purple background on silica plate. The quantitative antioxidant assay also manifested DPPH scavenging activity through the IC50 value 2.250 and 1.465 for schinus molle L extract and ascorbic acid respectively. The antibacterial screening indicated a variable degree of sensitivity of the test isolates against the antibacterial agents used and the MIC determined the lowest concentration at which schinus molle L extract inhibited the growth of the test isolates. The value being 0.21 ± 1.92 for escherichia coli and 0.205+1.5 for staphylococcus aureus.
