Özet notu | Expanding access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity is a pressing matter
in Somalia. Despite the country's negligible emissions, it faces challenges such as high
energy costs and climate vulnerability. To address these issues, a comprehensive study
has been conducted utilizing MATLAB simulation software and three advanced
algorithms: particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), and simulated
annealing (SA). The objective of the study is to determine the optimal designs for a
hybrid renewable energy (RE) system in Mogadishu, Somalia, by considering various
grid configurations and evaluating technical feasibility, economic viability, and system
reliability. The study assesses four different system configurations, namely utilities -
diesel-alone, PV-diesel hybrid, wind-diesel hybrid, and PV-wind-diesel hybrid. These
configurations are evaluated across the grids of three utilities: Benadir Electric
Company (BECO), Mogadishu Power Supply (MPS), and Blue-Sky Energy. In total,
forty-eight different systems are analyzed to identify the most suitable configurations
for the hybrid RE system. Among the evaluated configurations, the combined
PV/wind/diesel grid optimized with PSO emerges as the most effective solution. This
configuration showcases significant benefits, including a reduction in net present cost
by 32-47% and a decrease in the levelized cost of electricity by 41-60% when
compared to diesel-only systems. Importantly, the reliability of the system is
maintained throughout these improvements. Additionally, the hybrid system leads to
a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with reductions ranging
from 38-59% compared to conventional diesel-only systems. This study demonstrates
the potential of hybrid renewable energy systems in addressing the energy challenges
faced by Somalia. By integrating multiple renewable energy sources with traditional
diesel generation, the optimized PV/wind/diesel grid offers cost-effectiveness,
improved sustainability, and reduced environmental impact. Implementing such
systems could serve as a catalyst for achieving reliable and affordable electricity access
while mitigating climate change effects in Somalia. |
