'ABSTRACT STRUCTURE-FORM RELATIONSHIP IN CONTEMPORARY BUILDINGS Fatma Necla SAY University of Balıkesir, Institute of Science Architecture, Master of Science (M.S.c. Thesis/Thesis Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan REMAN) Balıkesir, 1998 Structure; one of the basic element that shapes the architecture, parallel to the progress of material, performed a development which follows the stages of technology. In every period, structure played a leader role at influencing the basic form of the building. At this study, the strctures that have been used from the spontaneous systems till today were analysed. It has been tried to emphasize the influence of structure to the form by giving examples. In chapter two, the structure in the architecture was described was described and the effects which provide the new structural systems to appear and develop, were evaluated. From the beginning up to now, structural devlopment were claasified. In chapter three, structural development before the Industrial Revolution were taken into consideration. Imporatant architectural styles at this period have been investigated in terms of appearances and their support to the architecture and depicted in the fourth chapter by visual datas (drawings, pictures, paintings etc). The introduction of materials like glass, iron, steel, and form, the architects and their designs were also taken into account at the fifth chapter. In chapter six, each of the contemporary structural systems that are "superficial systems", "spartial strutures", "suspend-strained systems" and "pneumatical systems" were described, its position in the historical development, principles of system and analysis, samples of application and structure-form realtionship were expressed, the subject were explained by pictures, drawings, etc. In chapter seven, partly industrailised building systems and prefabric reinforced concrete systems' description, classification, support to the architecture were considered and properties of these systems were taken into account with their positive and negative features. Systems were tried to express concerning today valuables, chosen examples. In the final chapter, all the structures referred in the previous chapters of the research were evaluated, and were tried to express by using graphics. New dimensions that the structural systems add to the architecture were strongly emphasized. Additionally, it is denoted that a human being's determination to renew himself and to search for better would never end. Dr. Orhan REMAN) Balıkesir, 1998 Mimarriyi meydana getiren temel elemanlardan olan strüktür, Zaman içinde malzemeye paralel olarak, teknolojik aşamaları izleyen bir gelişme göstermiş her dönemde yapılarin tümel formunu ettkileyen faktörlerin başında gelmistir. Bu çalışmada spontane sistemlerden başlayarak günümüze kadar kullnılan strüktürlerin analizi yapılmış, örneklerle strüktürün biçime etkisi vurgulanmaya çalışılmiştır... İkinci bölümde mimaride strüktür tanımlanmış ve yeni strüktür sistemlerinin oratya çıknasını ve sağlayan etkenler değerlendirilmiş, başlangıçtan günümüze srüktürel gelişme sınıflandırılmıştır. Üçüncü bölümde Endüstri Devrimi öncesi strüktürel gelişme ele alınmıştır. Bu dönemdekı önemli mimari stiller, oratya çikişları ve betonun mimariye girmesi, strüktür ve biçim olarak yeni sistemlerin ortaya çıkması, bu dönemin önemli mimarlarına ve tasarımlarına da yer verilerek beşinci bölümde incelenmiştir. Altıncı bölümde Çağdaş Strüktür sistemleri olan "Yüzeysel strüktürler" "Uzaysal strüktürler", "Asma-Germe sistemler" ve "Pnömatik sistemler" den her biri tanımlanmış, tarihi gelişim sürecindeki yeri, sistem ve analiz prensipleri, uygulama örnekleri ve strüktür-biçim ilişkisi vurgulanarak incelenmiş, konu resin ve şekillerle açıklanmıştır. Yedinci bölümde kısmen ecdüstrileşmiş yapım sistemlerinin ve prefabrike betonarme sistemlerin tanımlanması, sınıflandırılması, mimariye katkıları ve sistemlerin özellikeri ile incelenmistir. Sonuç bölümünde ise incelenen tüm strüktür sistemleri analiz edilmiş ve tüm sistemler grafiksel olarak ifade edilmiştir. Teknolojik ilermerlerle yeni malzemeler ve strüktürel sistemlerin mimariye kazandırdığı yeni boyutlar vurgulanmıştır.
