'Abstract In this thesis, soil and water samples from several different points within North Cyprus were collected and investigated. This investigation was also conducted to exploit the fact that the scale of industrial activities that took place over the centuries heavily affected the North Cyprus environment. Analysis of samples was carried out at the laboratory using X-Ray fluorescence technique (XRF). XRF is a quick and non-destructive analytical method used to identify and determine the concentrations of elements present in samples. XRF is capable of measuring elements ranging from boron (atomic number 5) to uranium (atomic number 92). Large concentration of Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), and aluminium (Al) were found in the Lefke region than in Girne and Magusa. Potassium concentration was higher in Magusa while significant amount of Phosphorus was only detected from sample collected from Girne. Further analyses were carried out on the water samples using ion chromatography technique. The major ion concentrations in the water samples were analyzed and the geochemical data obtained were displayed using the appropriate methods. Water samples from the three locations indicated high level of Chloride concentration in the sample collected from Girne. The hardness of water sample was also analyzed. Higher concentrations from the three locations were observed in October than March in the subsequent year. This is attributed to seasonal changes. Phosphate and Nitrogen were also detected in Lefke as a result of the agricultural activities occurring in the region. Alkalinity values were almost same for each region which was around 3mg as CaCO3/L and it was not affected by seasonal change. Finally, statistical modeling computations were carried out for selected areas to represent topography of regions as a mathematical expression and to carry out modeling the physicochemical processes that results contaminant transportation in groundwater. This study also can be further improved by analyzing detailed geological and hydrogeological information of the regions for a complete modeling program. Keywords: XRF, Soil and Water Analyses, North Cyprus, Modelling. Özet Bu çalışmada Kuzey Kıbrıs'ın değişik bölgelerinden toplanan toprak ve su numunelerinin karakterizasyonu yapılmıştır. Kuzey Kıbrıs'ta yapılan endüstriyel faaliyetler sonucu çevrede yarattıkları kimyasal etkilerin araştırmasına açısında bu tez çalışması bir örnek teşkil etmektedir. Analizler XRF tekniği kullanılarak yürütülmüştür. XRF hızlı ve örneği bozmadan analizine olanak veren analitik bir metod olup örnekler içerisindeki elemental kompozisyonu ortaya çıkarmakta kullanılmıştır. XRF Boron'dan (Atom numarası 5) Uranyum'a kadar (Atom numarası 92) olan elementleri analiz edebilmektedir. Toprak numunelerinden elde edilen sonuçlar ışığında Bakır (Cu), Demir (Fe) ve Aluminyum (Al) bulunma oranları Lefke bölgesinde Girne ve Gazi Magusa bölgelerine oranla daha yüksek gözlenmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra Potasyum (K) Gazi Magusa'da yüksek oranda bulunmuş ve Fosfor (P) elementi ise sadece Girne bölgesinde rastlanmıştır. Toprak örneklerine ek olarak bu bölgelerden alınan su örneklerinde major anyon ve katyon analizleri İyon Kromatografi tekniği ile saptanarak jeokimyasal bir veri elde edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Üç değişik bölgede alınan su örneklerinde klor iyonunun konsantrasyonu en yüksek Girne bölgesinde gözlenmiştir. Sulardaki sertlik mevsimsel olarak Kasım ayında Mart ayına göre daha fazla bulunmuştur. Fosfat ve azot bileşikleri Lefke bölgesinde daha sık rastlanılmış ve bu durum yoğun tarımsal faaliyetlerin gerçekleştiği alanda ortaya çıkmıştır. Su örneklerindeki alkalinite değerleri üç bölge için yaklaşık olarak birbiriyle benzeyen değerlerde 3 mg/L CaCO3 civarında gözlenerek bu değer mevsimsel olarak değişime uğramamıştır. Son olarak çalışılan bölgelerdeki topografik özelliklerin matematiksel modellenmesi çalışmaları yapılmış ve bu sayede fizikokimyasal prosesler sonucunda gerçekleşen yeraltısularında kirletici taşınımı gibi önem arzeden olayların modellenmesinin gerçekleştirilmesine olanak sağlanmıştır. Bu çalışmada oluşturulan model için bölgelerde daha detaylı jeolojik ve hidrojeolojik bilgiler toplanarak model parametrelerinin içerisinde eklenmesi ve kuvvetlendirilmesi ileriki çalışmalar tavsiye edilir.
