Özet notu 'ABSTRACT The Lefke-Gemikonağı copper mine was operated by the Cyprus Mine Company (CMC) between 1913 to 1974. The geo-environmental evaluation and risk assessment of heavy metals in the mine was carried out to ascertain degree of contamination. In the present study, soil samples were taken from two (2) differnt sample points CMC SITE 1 ( near the yellow soil hill), CMC SITE 2( near Karadag) and analysis were carried out by X-ray fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF) to quantify heavy metals (As,Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) concentrations in the soil while duplicate water samples are taken from each location i.e. Site 1 (CMC1, CMC2) and Site 2(CMC3, CMC4) and same heavy metals were analyzed using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS). In the soil the average concentrations of Zn, Cr, Pb is within threshold and natural background values, whereas some concentrations of As, Cu, Fe exceeded the prescribed threshold limit. Soil pH varied from 1.09 to 2.78 which may affect the solubility and mobility of these metals, as most of the metals are soluble in acidic soils. Pollution index is a powerful tool in ecological geochemistry and risk assessment. The commonly used pollution indices for analyzing heavy metals in soils and sendiments is the single index which includes the contamination factor (or concentration factor), ecological risk factors, and index of geo-accumulation. Calculations are done for different soil depths in the two (2) CMC sites and the soils classified according to this perturbations. In the duplicate water samples taken at site 1(CMC1, CMC2) and Site 2(CMC3,CMC4) Copper makes up more than 97% of the metal of concern. Keywords: AAS, CMC, XRF, Soil and Water Analyses, Lefke, Pollution Index. Özet Lefke-Gemikonağı bakır madeni, Kıbrıs Maden Kuruluşu (CMC) tarafından 1913-1974 yılları arasında işletilmiştir. Maden alanı içerisinde bulunan ağır metallerin çevreye olan etkileri Jeolojik-Çevresel değerlendirme ve risk çalışmaları yapılarak yürütülmüştür. Bu çalışma, biri sarı toprak tepesinin yanından diğeri Karadağ yakınlarından olmak üzere CMC bölgesinin 2 değişik noktasından alınan toprak numunelerindeki ağır metal bileşenlerinin (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) X-ray fluoresans spektrometresi ile analiz edilmesini kapsamaktadır. Aynı zamanda, toplanan numunelerdeki ağır metal kontrasyonu Atomik Absorbsiyon Spektrofotometresi (AAS) kullanılarak hesaplanmıştır. Toprak numuneleri içerisinde bulunan Zn, Cr ve Pb miktarları limit değer içerisinde gözlenirken, As, Cu ve Fe konsnatrasyonları limit değer üzerinde bulunmuştur. Toplanan numuneler içerisinde gözlenen pH 1.09-2.78 olarak bulunmuştur. Bu aralık ağır metallerin çözünürlüğünü ve çevresek matrisklerdeki taşınımını etkilemekte ve ağır metallerin asidik pH aralığında çözündüğü bilinmektedir. Kirlilik indeksi, ekolojik jeokimyasal analiz ve risk çalışmalarında kullanılan belirleyici ve güçlü bir araçtır. Toprak ve katı malzemeler içerisinde bulunan ağır metallerin analizinde en sık kullanılan kirlilik indeksleri kirlilik faktörü (konsanstrasyon faktörü), ekolojik risk faktörü ve jeo-depolama faktörüdür. Hesaplamalar belirtilen iki farklı bölgeden ve bu bölgelerdeki dört farklı derinlikten toplanan toprak numunelerinin sınıflandırılmasını içermektedir. Tekrarlanan numune alımları sonucunda maden bölgesi içerisinde bakır metalının %97 oranında payı olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
