'Abstract Regional integration schemes in Africa was set up with economic and technical intent both structurally and in focus. However, the enormous security threats posed to peace and security became overwhelming that these objectives became apparently unattainable in a condition of insecurity. These organizations were therefore forced by circumstances to assume new roles of conflict prevention , and resolution in their respective regions. Key in such measures was the signing into effect the protocols relating to conflict prevention , management and resolution by regional organizations such as The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and southern African Development Community (SADC). In a bid to look into the roles of ECOWAS and SADC as mechanisms for conflict prevention, management and resolution in West and Southern Africa, this study focused basically on the regional integration schemes in Africa with specific interest in SADC and ECOWAS. The study examined the mechanisms put in place by the organizations in relation to issues of peace and security in their sub-regions through a comparative analysis.
