This study is aimed at researching and studying the current state of the road regarding the cause of the deterioration, the factors affecting it and proffer possible recommendations that will help resuscitate the conditions of the highways, in other to carry out a proper maintenance of the highways certain details need to be available to ensure best practices are implored in the process of maintenance or even reconstruction. This study employed use of visual inspection method of pavements inspection to analyses the state of the roads. This was made possible by an existing dataset from the Libyan bureau of highway and licenses. The images in the dataset were classified according to highways and were analyzed using factor analysis, the factor analysis used in this study was to identify the pavement distress types and the severity of the pavement distress. This study has led to the identification of the major pavement distress types, their causes and recommended how to go about remedying these distresses.
