ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to generally assess the impact of motivation on employee commitment and satisfaction among employees of selected new generation commercial banks in Abeokuta. More specifically investigated the effect of bonus scheme on commitment, health and medical benefits on job satisfaction and impact of retirement benefit on job satisfaction. A survey design was adopted. Quota sampling technique was used in obtaining a sample of ninety employees in six (6) selected listed new generation commercial banks in Nigeria. The instrument used was a self-developed questionnaire and OLS regression as the analytical technique. The study found that bonus schemes significantly enhance commitment of employees of new generation commercial banks in Abeokuta, health and medical benefits have a significant effect on job satisfaction but found retirement benefit to have an insignificantly effect on job satisfaction. Based on the findings, the study recommends that bonus scheme must be well developed in the banking sector to ensure fairness and align with the principle of ‘work more, get more’. Since, good health and well-being of employees in the banking sector are germane better performance, sound employee’s healthcare programs should be developed especially in the area of health insurance and retirement package should be periodically reviewed to cater for the future of employees. This will reduce tendencies of stealing especially in a place where large volume of cash is handled.
