ABSTRACT
This thesis examines how the use of social media by Jordanian political elites impact political decision-making and corruption in the Kingdom of Jordan. It probes into the motives of political participation and scrutinizes the relationship between social media and political activity. The study also examines the level of political awareness and communication within a selected sample. Adopting Jürgen Habermas’ public sphere theory, the study addresses social communication as a core area of non-institutional interaction which is more prevalent than institutional political activities.
This thesis relied on the quantitative survey method, which is aimed at identifying current facts concerning the nature of a particular phenomenon or subject. An intentional sampling of 206 Jordanian elite and a simple random sample survey of Jordanians of age 18 and above (who are eligible to vote in parliamentary elections) was carried out. The questionnaire was designed online through google forms and sent as a link through social media (Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, and emails).
A total 415 people participated in the surveys, revealing social media platforms as an ideal interface for the exchange of opinions between Jordanian political hierarchy and the public. Therein, an illusory gap is bridged between the Jordanian elite and commoners, highlighting issues like corruption, and underscoring the importance of social media and essential tool in the fight against corruptive intentions.
The findings of this study confirm that there is an important role played by social networking sites in the process of political communication between the Jordanian political elite and the public in Jordan. The empirical evidence of this finding was high, thereby constituting a basis in this political process and achieving compatibility with Hebermas assertion that the virtual world constitutes a center for dialogue and follow-up of issues and presents a general opinion that affects the political decision-making system.
