Institute of Graduate Studies and Research International Law Department Özet: ABSTRACT In Nigeria, educating a girl child is usually considered as a second option for most families, most especially in the northern region of the country. Female children are usually made to consider marriage and other home activities, instead of education. This thesis reports the challenges that girl child education faces as well as the violations of the rights to education of female children. The research also shows some cases of the female education in other countries. From the analysis of this thesis, we can safely say that there is large inequality in female education as compared to educating a male child; this obvious and systematic inequality has now been normalized in the society. It furthermore reports the importance of education and the larger impact it brings to the society despite the fact that there is still a controversy on weather educating a girl child impacts the society positively or not. In this thesis we find out that some of the major causes of the violations of girl child education are poverty, ignorance, poor governance and improper implementation of the Nigerian law on human rights. The research also shows a comparative analysis between Nigeria and Turkey on how they face gender inequality when it comes to education and possible remedies that could put a stop to this ongoing problem. The aim is to bring the ongoing problem to the fore and how it could be addressed or through creating proper awareness, passing information to the girl child about her human rights and also to the parents and government on the responsibilities on guiding and protecting them against all forms of abuses which will hopefully put an end to the ignorance, insurgence and diverse cultural ideologies serving the purpose of building young girls into strong independent women, eradicating poverty, making a more developed country and a balanced system when it comes to responsibilities for the progress and hope of a better Nigeria in the future.
