ABSTRACT Among African students from (The Sub-Saharan African Countries) studying in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, many still see credit card as a means to extort money from the poor. A total of 50 semi structured questionnaires were distributed among African students in Cyprus International University and some Business Diploma Schools in TRNC. Some banks in Famagusta were also interviewed to know their views concerning credit card transactions among the African Students who carry out transactions with them. The results reveal that 62% of those interviewed were males and 38% were females. In terms of their educational levels, 30% were from Higher Diploma Schools, 40% in degree, 20% in master and 10% PhD. Majority of the informants (95%) reported having some knowledge of the credit card system while 5% didn't have knowledge about it. However, only 25% of the informants reported of having credit cards. 75% didn't have any access to the credit cards even though they have some knowledge about the system. Although a wide number of the informants didn't possess credit cards, they believed widespread sensitization will help widen the implementation of the system. They further said that credit cards provide fast transactions and also gives short term loans and reduce robbery. Respondents' views of effect of credit cards to the economy showed that 20% said it will hurt the economy by increasing online fraud, increase debt, high interest rates and compulsory buying. Interview with bank managers showed that the best measure to improve the usage of credit card among African students in TRNC and eliminate the negative ideas they are having about the system is sensitization as majority (50%) of the respondents said wide sensitization on how the system works will help boast the sector. In a nutshell credit card is a good monetary technology as it advantages surpasses its disadvantages and if measures mentioned in the research are well implemented, African students in TRNC will all embrace the system and the results will lead to improve the financial economy in TRNC and their respective countries in general as the knowledge would be shared back home.
