ABSTRACT The social media has changed the dynamics of how we transmit and evaluate information. With increasing membership, social media has brought about the idealized public sphere where people come together, identify societal problems, discuss issues and reach a judgement. Social media is metaphorically the "coffee shop", people come to talk about their daily lives. Social media as a means of diffusing and disseminating information, attitudes, ideas and knowledge among a large heterogeneous or target audience can serve as a viable tool to change norms or societal belief about sexual assault and other domestic violence. Social media platforms can also help to amplify the voices of domestic violence survivors and perpetrators to be heard by various audiences. The platforms provide a public sphere to share stores and engage in discussions that are geared towards addressing the societal norms, beliefs and attitudes that encourage domestic violence. Using the quantitative survey method, with a sample size of 384, this study sets out to investigate the role of social media in promoting awareness on domestic violence against women in Nigeria. Data gathered from the study were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and the findings revealed that social media increases awareness on domestic violence against women, as respondents claimed that they see reportage of issues of domestic violence in the social media very often. However, the study suggests further expansion to other related areas such as the influence of social media awareness on domestic violence on individual perception and attitudinal change. The study also recommends the adoption of other research designs such as longitudinal, experimental, case study, group discussions and interview where possible to examine the relationship between social media awareness and domestic violence.
