To this end, this thesis sets out to analyze the social media usage and motivations of university students, adopting the theory of uses and gratification; Conducting a general description of the conceptualization and historical development, the tools of social networks, an analysis of the uses and the gratification approach and ultimately – a review of the research results to shed light on the focal point of this research paper. In a bid to achieve this, it adopts a face-to-face questionnaire method to extract necessary results involving the user behavior of university students and the consequent gratifications; analyzing the patterns and frequency of this usage. The research finds that the interactive nature of user-sought gratification is valid, and highlights the importance of affective needs and social integrative needs in the motivation of social media usage by university students.
