ABSTRACT
The Grit Scale is a commonly used tool to test students’ grit levels. The aim of this
research was to find out whether there is a correlation between the students’ Grit scale
scores and attendance, if there is a correlation between the students’ Grit scale scores
and their grades in English, in other words, their academic performances, if there is a
significant difference between male and female respondents regarding Grit Scale
scores, whether the Grit Scale scores of the students vary according to their mother
tongues, and if the Grit Scale scores of the students vary according to their department.
To this end, this research was carried out with hundred and fifty English Preparatory
intermediate students researching at Cyprus International University. According to the
results of the research, there is no correlation between the students’ Grit Scale scores
and their attendance. Also, there is not a significant correlation between the students’
Grit scale scores and their total grades. There is a significant difference between male
and female respondents regarding their Grit Scale scores. The Grit Scale scores of the
students vary according to their mother tongues, which are French, Arabic, Persian,
and Turkish. Also, the Grit Scale scores of the students vary according to their
departments which are the department of Social Sciences, the Department of Natural
Sciences, and the Department of Health Sciences. Furthermore, this study also looked
