The study argues that although the liberal framework, ideas and structures driving the spread of globalization have seen the growth of countries in certain sectors, the overall merits are scanty. More to the point, globalization has had equal or even worse effects on an emerging economy like Nigeria. Keywords: Globalization, Global Political Economy, Nigeria.

ABSTRACT
This thesis examines the economic impacts of globalization in Nigeria between 1962 to 2009. The study periods have been divided into pre-globalization periods between 1962 and 1985 and the post-globalization period between 1986 to 2009.The study posits that the post-colonial structures left the country rife for the adoption of policies that contributed to the economic liberalization of its market. In particular, the country agricultural industry and its crop production capacity, the abundance of its solid mineral, its petroleum reserves including crude oil producing capacity. The transportation and communication sectors, as well as its manufacturing capacity were all pathways that stimulated acceleration to a sustained economic growth. However, the overall outcome of the country’s experience with the rest of the world through the forces of globalization have been mixed. While tremendous growth scores have been recorded in its economic sector, significant downward trends have been recorded in other areas as well. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the impacts of globalization on Nigeria’s economy. The evidence of regressive economic output in Nigeria and other developing countries poses a crucial challenge to the ideological proposition of the neoliberal perspectives on free markets, the integration of supply and demand into a global structure and interdependencies created by trade. In particular, the emphasis on deregulation, removal of tariffs and subsidies, limited government spending and currency devaluation have all proven futile as a remedy to sustained growth. Adopting a case study qualitative design with a focus of critical literature review of existing research in the field, this study seeks to bring out the perilous flaws in the liberal arguments about economic development vis-à-vis globalization in emerging economies. The study argues that although the liberal framework, ideas and structures driving the spread of globalization have seen the growth of countries in certain sectors, the overall merits are scanty. More to the point, globalization has had equal or even worse effects on an emerging economy like Nigeria.
