ABSTRACT
Reducing energy consumption in buildings also can be referred to it as increasing the energy efficiency in a building. Energy efficiency, as a simple definition, is the act of using less energy while maintaining the same level of energy services, for example using insulation materials in the construction of a building will reduce the consumption of energy for cooling and heating. Energy efficiency in buildings can be considered as the quickest, and most cost effective in addition to environmentally friendly way to manage and reduce the usage of energy. In this thesis, three different study cases has been taken into consideration located in Turkish republic of northern Cyprus, a normal villa without any renewable system installed, a flat also with no renewable system installed, and the third study case is a villa with solar system installed for electricity generation. In each of the study cases we got the calculations needed to transform the building into sustainable one, by getting offers from solar energy companies to be installed in the desirable building. The study cases were simulated using SAM software and the obtained results has been compared. The environmental impact have been also taken into consideration where the effect of transforming buildings into sustainable ones is studied and how it would affect the numbers of the carbon footprints in buildings.
