This research will be beneficial to focus on the levels of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) of preparatory school English learners at a Northern Cyprus university. It aims to examine the ICC scores of English learners and analyse if there is any significant difference in terms of nationality, mother tongue and gender. This research was organized in a quantitative method research design. Quantitative data was collected with ICC questionnaire. ICC questionnaire is composed of four factors; skills, attitude, awareness and knowledge. When the scores of participants were analysed in terms of each factor, it was found that there is no significant difference between the certain variables and ICC skills, attitudes, awareness and knowledge scores, except the awareness scores of the participants in terms of nationality. The average of intercultural communicative awareness scores of Africans is 2.72, while the average of intercultural communicative awareness scores of Asians is 3.17. ABSTRACT
Language teachers who specialize in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) are
aware that cultural influences also play a part in language learning. Ho (2009)
highlights that, it is difficult to separate culture and language, and ICC must be
included in the language teaching process. Learners who lack cultural understanding
may have some issues like misunderstanding, miscommunication, disharmony and
communication conflicts in intercultural settings. This reveals how understanding
cultural norms and expectations is just as important for effective communication as
language proficiency when dealing with individuals from different cultural
backgrounds. As a result, the importance of intercultural communication and the
incorporation of cultural components into language teaching have become widely
recognized, resulting in significant changes in foreign language education.
This research will be beneficial to focus on the levels of intercultural communicative
competence (ICC) of preparatory school English learners at a Northern Cyprus
university. It aims to examine the ICC scores of English learners and analyse if there
is any significant difference in terms of nationality, mother tongue and gender. This
research was organized in a quantitative method research design. Quantitative data was
collected with ICC questionnaire. ICC questionnaire is composed of four factors;
skills, attitude, awareness and knowledge. When the scores of participants were
analysed in terms of each factor, it was found that there is no significant difference
between the certain variables and ICC skills, attitudes, awareness and knowledge
scores, except the awareness scores of the participants in terms of nationality. The
average of intercultural communicative awareness scores of Africans is 2.72, while the
average of intercultural communicative awareness scores of Asians is 3.17.
