ABSTRACT
Governments, higher education officials, executives, and practitioners continue to be
concerned about students’ academic success, whether they are evaluated by exams,
tests, a grading system, and/or successful completion rates. Student engagement is
widely recognized as crucial as it greatly determines their academic success. The
factors that determine the level of SE are yet to be fully defined, and the term
"engagement" is a relative term that varies depending on the situation. This research
assessed the major factors affecting the students’ engagement at Cyprus International
University, specifically the Management Information Systems Graduate and
Postgraduate students. This study provides additional knowledge to the existing ones
while also outlining engagement-related learning experience. A descriptive-correlated
methodological research approach and a quantitative data collection method were
used. Students' information was gathered with an online questionnaire. The factors
affecting the students’ levels of engagement were segmented into three major clusters:
1) teacher factor; 2) institution factor; 3) family factor. These factor clusters produce
the greatest impact on students’ engagement along with their desire to succeed
academically. LSE, TF, IF, and FF is identified as the main factors affecting SE.
Students' overall engagement was found to be low (mean=2.59), based on the study's
analysis. IF had the highest mean of 2.92, followed by LSE at 2.79, TF at 2.38, and FF
at 2.27. Analyses of the relationships between the selected factors and LSE, and the
factors predicting SE show significant correlations between the predictor variables and
factors. The study will give the university an idea about the LSE of Graduate and
Postgraduate CIU MIS students, along with their perceptions of the lecturers,
institution, and their families. The results will enable the teachers and the institution
to become more productive while also giving the students opportunities to optimize
their engagement level which will result in relevant learning experiences.
