ABSTRACT
This ECOWAS was first conceived of as a regional economic bloc when it was
established in 1975. It was able to turn into a security organisation by making
significant changes to the original treaty and by incorporating new procedures, and it
eventually became involved in the humanitarian crises that were developing at the time
in the West African nations of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The role of the Economic
Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in peace building missions in Sierra
Leone and Liberia is investigated and evaluated in this thesis. The value of this study
resides in the fact that it proposes African responses to African problems, which is a
potential game-changer for the continent. The ECOWAS intervention in Sierra Leone
and Liberia was the first of its type in all of Africa, and it may just be the incentive
that is required for Africans to bring fresh ideas to the table in order to solve some of
the various problems that are now facing the continent. Because of these two crucial
considerations, the participation of ECOWAS in Sierra Leone and Liberia was entirely
warranted. To begin, the power to do so was granted to ECOWAS by the founding
treaty of the organisation, which includes the protocols and ensures that all 16 member
countries are parties to those protocols. Second, the responsibility to protect and
safeguard was the guiding principle that served as the ethical, moral, and political
foundation for the intervention.
