With the discovery of long non coding RNA (lncRNAs), our knowledge in the metastasis and progression of breast cancer has been doubling with each research carried out. The oncogene H19 lncRNA has been discovered to directly or indirectly influence cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, inflammation and cell death among other processes. H19 levels regulation either upward or downward, has been suggested to cause cancer cell migration, metastasis and drug resistance. This research investigates H19 lncRNA levels in breast cancer cell after inducing genotoxic stress with the drug, Cytarabine. Our findings have shown that cytotoxic agent cytarabine stopped the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines and caused lethality after 72 hours of time interval. The expression levels of H19 increased until 48 hours and decreased sharply at 72 hours implicating a relation between cytotoxic activity of cytarabine and the expression of H19. ABSTRACT
Breast Cancer without doubt is one of the leading health diseases in the world mostly
in women. With the discovery of long non coding RNA (lncRNAs), our knowledge in
the metastasis and progression of breast cancer has been doubling with each research
carried out. The oncogene H19 lncRNA has been discovered to directly or indirectly
influence cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, inflammation and cell death
among other processes. H19 levels regulation either upward or downward, has been
suggested to cause cancer cell migration, metastasis and drug resistance. This research
investigates H19 lncRNA levels in breast cancer cell after inducing genotoxic stress
with the drug, Cytarabine. Our findings have shown that cytotoxic agent cytarabine
stopped the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines and caused lethality after
72 hours of time interval. The expression levels of H19 increased until 48 hours and
decreased sharply at 72 hours implicating a relation between cytotoxic activity of
cytarabine and the expression of H19.
Keywords: Breast Cancer, Cytarabine, H19, lncRNA.
