ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution in Liberia
and Sierra Leone. The research further analyzes the effectiveness of the United
Nations, especially with regard to its broad conflict resolution mandate,
peacekeeping, and execution of critical peace building tasks, such as DDRR, security
sector reform, issues relating to human rights and the rule of law, and transitional
justice. This study revealed what was the cause of the conflict in Liberia and Sierra
Leone, and the role of the United Nations in conflict resolution in Liberia and Sierra
Leone.
The methodology used in this study is qualitative, which relies predominantly on the
collection of materials from relevant secondary literature and interviews. The
findings of this study will reveal the significance of the role of the United Nations,
the government's and other major actors' in conflict resolution in Liberia and Sierra
Leone and their conflict prevention mechanisms to avoid conflict recurrence.
