Konu(lar): Tez notu: Thesis (MSc) - Cyprus International University. Institute of Graduate Studies and Research Nursing Department Özet: ABSTRACT Ageing is a regular aspect of life and as people age, their functional skills deteriorate, resulting in poor health conditions and a reduction in their capacity to carry out their daily activities. Yet, there exists a huge paucity of studies that asses the quality of life of the elderly population in terms loss of their physical function. This study therefore identified the factors affecting the daily activities of the elderly in Ghana and the North Cyprus (TRNC). Using the Slovin’s sample size, the study used a total sample size of 390 aged, with 110 from Ghana and 280 from the TRNC. A convenience sampling was applied in the data collection with an SPSS, used for the analysis. A multiple linear regression was then chosen to estimate the effect of the demographic characteristics of the respondents on ADL, IADL’s and the pandemic activities. The study concluded that, while age, educational, professional, and marital statuses all have statistically significant relationship with only ADL and IADL’s. Age and gender had a statistically significant relationship with pandemic activities. Additionally, the study identified that an adoption and adaption of the various scales measuring the activities of daily living will provide a more reliable results if tailored to suit the cultural, customs and beliefs of individual countries. ABSTRACT
Ageing is a regular aspect of life and as people age, their functional skills deteriorate,
resulting in poor health conditions and a reduction in their capacity to carry out their
daily activities. Yet, there exists a huge paucity of studies that asses the quality of
life of the elderly population in terms loss of their physical function. This study
therefore identified the factors affecting the daily activities of the elderly in Ghana
and the North Cyprus (TRNC). Using the Slovin’s sample size, the study used a
total sample size of 390 aged, with 110 from Ghana and 280 from the TRNC. A
convenience sampling was applied in the data collection with an SPSS, used for the
analysis. A multiple linear regression was then chosen to estimate the effect of the
demographic characteristics of the respondents on ADL, IADL’s and the pandemic
activities. The study concluded that, while age, educational, professional, and marital
statuses all have statistically significant relationship with only ADL and IADL’s.
Age and gender had a statistically significant relationship with pandemic activities.
Additionally, the study identified that an adoption and adaption of the various scales
measuring the activities of daily living will provide a more reliable results if tailored
to suit the cultural, customs and beliefs of individual countries.
