ABSTRACT
The COVID-19 pandemic which began in 2020 has drastically changed our lives.
It has resulted in health, economic, environmental, and social losses. It has also
shown the need for solutions news stories that would bridge the gap between health
officials and the public. Research during the pandemic showed an increase in TV and
digital news consumption and a reduction in print media due to the lockdowns.
Although there was an increase in misinformation across social media sources—
particularly, Facebook and WhatsApp—the use of applications and digital
platforms of mainstream media was reliable. This study employed the content analysis
method to examine how four digital news sources in Nigeria reported the pandemic.
The selected digital news platforms are: Premium Times (PT), The International
Centre for Investigative Reporting, The Cable, and Nigerian Health Watch. A total of
400 news contents were considered for analysis. Analysis of the data reveals that the
main genre of news was news stories. The themes or topics covered were 21% on
regular updates, 17% on therapeutics (vaccines and drugs), 16% on COVID-19 impact
on lifestyle, and 11.75% on impact on economy. The articles on the digital news
platforms had a majority slant of negative news stories and were 90% problem-centred
and 10% solution-centred news. The digital news platforms were more interested in
providing regular updates on the virus which included testing, number of deaths, and
recoveries. They were less interested in providing meaningful insights and information
on solutions for the pandemic. The research showed a limitation in the coverage of
themes such as prevention measures, impact on social gatherings, and return to normal.
It recommends that the media should invest in human interest stories that will reveal
the public’s refusal to comply with certain measures, understands their perspective,
and provides solutions to tackle them.
