Institute of Graduate Studies and Research International Law Department Özet: ABSTRACT This study will focus on the action of the UN in the region of Great Lakes in Africa, first of all, we will talk about the UN as an organisation working for peace and international security, we will then see what is the purpose of the UN, and what its responsibilities are, we will also see the mechanisms by which the UN intervenes in various conflicts around the world, peacekeeping operations, of course we are going to list them. Then we will list the armed conflicts in the region of Great Lakes, as we know, this region is composed of 3 countries namely the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi, so we will focus on UN actions in these 3 countries, in DRC with the two missions adopted by the general assembly which are MONUC and MONUSCO, in Rwanda with the creation of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda that was to try all perpetrators of the crime of Genocide and crime against humanity and in Burundi with the ONUB to end civil war. We are going to know the cause of these conflicts and possibly to see the intervention of the UN in the resolution of these conflicts. This study will also focus on the mechanism available for the UN to bring peace in the regions where there are armed conflicts and possibly to eradicate these conflicts for lasting peace.
