It seeks to investigate the importance of Twitter usage among Nigerian Journalists and examine how Reporters have adapted their Journalistic practices in response to the rise in Twitter functionality. This study adopts two relevant theories that are considered appropriate. The two theories include Agenda Setting Theory and Technological Determinism Theory. Quantitative research is adopted, while an inductive methodology based on the social constructionism theoretical framework is employed. The descriptive approach was used as the foundation for the research methodology used in the examination. The study sampled 100 Reporters who work in media houses such as National Television Authority (NTA), Channels and TVC via questionnaire and data gathered was analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi square test and correlation analysis to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of this study prove that smartphones have a major impact on the way news is reported and covered. The study suggests that the respondents make an adequate use of their twitter handle as they consider twitter an essential news dissemination channel. Further findings however revealed that the respondents do not conduct interviews using twitter as a platform nor did they connect frequently to their reader/listener on twitter. On the contrary, it was revealed that twitter has killed the credibility of journalism, as reporters are forced to tweet personal viewpoint rather than being neutral and they tend to be biased in their reportage on Twitter. It is recommended that there is an urgent requirement for an increase in the amount of training and awareness that is provided to journalists about the efficient utilization of developing digital technologies for the reporting and dissemination of news. ABSTRACT
This study aimed at examining the adoption of emerging digital technologies in today's news reporting and dissemination: a study of Twitter usage among Nigerian Journalists. Quantitative research is adopted, while an inductive methodology based on the social
constructionism theoretical framework is employed. Further findings however revealed that the respondents do not conduct interviews using twitter as a platform nor did they connect frequently to their
reader/listener on twitter. On the contrary, it was revealed that twitter has killed the credibility of journalism, as reporters are forced to tweet personal viewpoint rather than being neutral and they tend to be biased in their reportage on Twitter. It is recommended that there is an urgent requirement for an increase in the amount of
training and awareness that is provided to journalists about the efficient utilization of developing digital technologies for the reporting and dissemination of news.
