ABSTRACT
This study explored the Mauritanian politicians’ perspectives regarding the impact of fake news on voting decisions in Mauritania’s 2019 Presidential election. This was done through the administration of semi-structured in-depth interviews to eighteen politicians in Mauritania who represent the pro-government and oppositional sides in the country. The study reflects their perceptions on the role of social media in
Mauritania during political elections and the effects of fake news on voters’ decision making during the 2019 presidential elections in Mauritania. The study also aimed at determining if the fake news contributed to the success of the Mauritanian president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani in the elections. The results of the interview revealed that social media is an active part of people’s life in Mauritania. Although many people relied principally on Facebook and WhatsApp for everyday news, they were not necessarily influenced by news on these platforms. This is because during the 2019 Presidential elections in Mauritania, the fake news circulating on social media was largely against president Ghazouani, yet he still emerged successful in the elections. As a result of these results, the study concluded that the circulation of fake news in Mauritania during the 2019 elections, had no impact on voters’ decisions.
