ABSTRACT
Social media's invention has made a huge difference in modern society. The political arena has also been affected by this predicament, with social media serving as a catalyst for political activity. Therefore, using a survey research method, a structured questionnaire, and a purposive sampling approach to collect data from a sample of 366 respondents drawn from Abuja metropolis in Abuja who are knowledgeable about the use of social media for political engagement, this study examines social media and Nigerian politics, with particular emphasis on their opportunities and difficulties. The results of the study showed that 100% of Abuja residents use social media for political engagement in Nigeria, and that use was assessed as satisfactory for that purpose by 45.1% of respondents. Similar to this, 73.5 percent of the respondents stated that social media had increased their interest in politics. Additionally, 78.7% strongly agree that there are barriers to using social media for political engagement in Nigeria, some of which include the inability to recognize fake news and propaganda, a lack of devices to access the internet, and a lack of money to pay for subscriptions, among others. The researcher therefore recommends that although social media is frequently utilized for political engagement in Nigeria, political parties, advocacy organizations, corporations, and people should make more of an effort to use it more frequently for political conversations and interactions. This is because social media in the nation has a sizable user base, more attempts should be made to use social media for political involvement in Nigeria, with a focus on the content of political discourse on these
platforms since this can influence how Nigerians view its use even more and in order
to encourage popular political involvement in Nigeria, political government officials and non-state actors should take advantage of the significant opportunities given by social media.
