ABSTRACT
This research investigates the impact of green supply chain management (GSCM) on sustainable development dimensions and the impact of GSCM on environmental health outcomes. This thesis aims to suggest a method that helps practitioners and policymakers mitigate supply chain risks and enhance environmental health levels. The study's model was structured using factors related to GSCM, including green purchasing, environmental cooperation, reverse logistics, eco-design, internal environmental management, and investment recovery. The principal contribution is to explore the linkage between GSCM and sustainable development on one side and with environmental health outcomes on the other. The evaluation of the impacts of GSCM on sustainable development and environmental health in the food sector was examined for the first time. The second contribution of this study is to identify which of the GSCM practices have a significant effect on sustainable development dimensions and environmental health outcomes, particularly in the food production sector. A questionnaire-based survey was employed to examine the proposed model; 102 responses from senior managers of food firms in Lebanon were collected. An
exploratory factor analysis (EFA), a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and multiple regressions were applied using the SPSS and AMOS statistical software. The outcome of the structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that four of the six factors related to GSCM were significantly related to environmental health
outcomes. The study findings can be applied at the external level through many green practices in cooperation with suppliers and customers, such as environmentally friendly design, purchasing, production, packaging, and energy use reduction. This can increase the level of environmental health outcomes by decreasing the impact of SCM risks. Regarding the internal level, implementing various procedures and
decisions can promote an environmentally friendly culture within the firms, such as the commitment of GSCM practices from the management and the implementation of an internal eco-performance evaluation system. This may enhance the environmental health provisions by setting up an action plan to mitigate GSCM risks
and address sustainable health objectives. This thesis's originality is in filling the gap in the literature about how GSCM can mitigate SCM risks. In addition, examining the relationship between GSCM and
environmental health outcomes was an additional novelty. This study was an initiative to assess the impacts of GSCM practices on environmental health outcomes in the food industry.
