The handling and treatment of patients in general requires professional skills. However, the treatment of patients of substance abuse requires excessive professional skills and training especially when the patient is addicted. Due to the professional skills required, it is rare to find social workers dedicated to specific areas of such treatment programs. Therefore, the responsibility of treatment in relation to addicted patients is usually saddled with many non-professionals with less skills and specialization. Nevertheless, social workers are considered as charged with a major role to play in the successful treatment of substance abuse patients. Social work is a very vital and indispensable area of profession that encompasses the use of social, psychological, medical and emotional skills to guide a problematic person through a series of recovery activities. Social work is an indispensable profession in our complex and ever-changing society. However, the activities involved in social work make it a complex profession to explain because of how diverse those activities are. The significance of the study is that it makes major contributions towards the academic literature in relation to the engagement of social workers with patients. Furthermore, it identifies the major motivations of social workers towards therapy processes in different settings. Another significance of this study is that would enhance the perception of those social workers to apply evidence-based strategies to treat substance abuse patients.
