In recent years, Mega Events, characterized by their global significance and extensive societal impact have been qualified as popular catalysts for urban development, that have the capability to shape the urban landscape; their environmental, physical, social, and economic impact on the host city is a generally accepted phenomenon.
This thesis questions this relationship and explores the role of Mega Events in sustainable urban development. The study employs a comprehensive approach, combining historical analysis, economic evaluation, and an assessment of social-cultural, and environmental dimensions of Mega projects to unravel the intricate relationship between Mega Events and sustainable urban development. Moreover, infrastructural development, technological innovations, post-expo activities, and legacy, which are pivotal aspects of Mega Events, are evaluated in terms of their contribution to urban development and lasting growth in host cities. To limit the research scope, three international case studies of cities that have hosted Mega Events are chosen, with a special focus on the EXPO World, to analyse the above-mentioned aspects and their contribution to sustainable urban development in their host cities. It is expected that the lessons learned from these experiences can be helpful in demonstrating the relationship between sustainable urban development and hosting a Mega Event, the EXPO.
In summary, the thesis presents a nuanced understanding of how Mega Events can either facilitate or impede sustainable urban development. It offers a comprehensive view that encompasses economic, social-cultural, and environmental perspectives, elucidating the multifaceted impact of Mega Events on the sustainable development of urban areas. The research thus contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between large-scale events and urban development, offering insights for future planning and implementation of such events in urban contexts.
