Luffa Sponge is one of the prevalent biomasses in Nigeria and other hot locations
composed mainly of lignin and cellulose. It was collected from farmlands within the
Warwade areas of Dutse, Jigawa, Nigeria. It was determined that 300 dried Luffa
sponge pieces would be plenty for this project. Each piece that had been gathered
was combined and given the same care. The batch adsorption method was adopted.
The impact of initial dye concentration, sorbent weight, contact duration, pH,
temperature, and shaking rate were studied. It was discovered that approximately
thirty minutes duration of contact was sufficient to yield about 90% removal. It was
discovered that when the ratio of the luffa's weight to the initial dye concentration
increased, so did the amount of MB dye that was adsorbed onto the luffa cylindrical.
It was discovered that an acidic environment (pH less than 4) was not conducive to
adsorption, with a higher percentage of adsorptions taking place in the initial mixture
pH 4–10 range. It was found that the optimum conditions are pH 4, 12.5 mg/L MB,
12 g/L sorbent dose, 60 minutes, 80 rpm, and 25 ºC. However, rapid uptake occurred
around the first 30 minutes, therefore it can be economically considered as sufficient
for industrial application because the difference between 30 to 60 minutes is not up
to 3%. Adsorption Isotherm was studied by Langmuir, Freundlich, D-R, and Temkin
models. Langmuir fits with qm 0.45 and showed that uptake happened through
monolayer sorption, and values for the adsorption intensity, n, larger than 1, which
indicates a favorable process, were obtained from the Freundlich isotherm. RL was
close to 1.00 for all the initial concentrations indicating linear adsorption. The
adsorbate and adsorbent have a stronger connection because the values of (1/n)
are less. The results indicate that Luffa cylindrica can be a native, eco-friendly, and
inexpensive abundant biomass to remove dye from wastewater.
