This paper conducts a discourse analysis of gender portrayal in two influential Hollywood films, "The Woman King" and "Black Panther," assessing their impact on the evolving narrative of gender representation in cinema. The study investigates the films' roles in reshaping traditional gender roles and stereotypes within the cinematic landscape.
"The Woman King" offers a glimpse into the historical context of female empowerment, featuring a narrative centered around female warriors in 18th-century Africa. Through discourse analysis, the film's portrayal of strength, resilience, and leadership challenges conventional gender norms, providing a nuanced representation of femininity.
"Black Panther" presents a futuristic vision of Wakanda, where women occupy crucial roles as warriors, scientists, and leaders. The film's depiction of empowered and multifaceted female characters marks a departure from stereotypical roles often assigned to women in mainstream cinema.
Through the examination of discourse surrounding these films, this study elucidates the nuanced ways in which films are evolving in their depiction of women, gravitating towards more diverse, intricate, and empowering representations. This research enhances our understanding of cinema's transformative potential in shaping societal perceptions of gender roles and fostering inclusivity on screen.
