Özet: 'ABSTRACT The current research aims to investigate how English Language Learners help their students improve their vocabulary at Duhok University in Northern Iraq. Since vocabulary knowledge has a significant role in mastering the new language and in attaining total academic achievement, especially when language is used as a medium of instruction. Student in Northern Iraq need English language practically rather than only for fulfilling the academic demand to obtain a certain degree, at the same time in order to help students be successful in practicing English language as a second language they need to gain greater knowledge of the language. Learning vocabulary is an important factor in learning English language,therefore it is very important to address the questions of how students build and create their vocabularies, what kind of strategies do they employ in order to learn new vocabulary; therefore the current research is to examine the variety and range of vocabulary learning strategies among students. An active involment and engagement of th students in the process of learning and teaching English will have a significant effect on learning English vocabulary. This means that collaboration should involve in learning and teaching process, a student will not be able to learn alone also, education provider will not be able to teach without student. Certainly, it would be useless exercise to think of successful learning if the learner is to have a secondary role in the learning vocabulary. Therefore, it is usually recognized that every effort should be made in order to understand how the students approaches their learning and to pursue more valuable methods of growing their participation in the learning of English Vocabulary. Consequently, research findings will clarify learning strategies and methods for students in Duhok University in northern Iraq used by, Survey method to analyze this study, the researcher prepared the questionnaire and distributed in English language teaching (ELT) department at Duhok University. The Random sampling method was used in this study. The random sampling was carried out in English language teaching (ELT) department at Duhok University. The researcher distributed 190 questionnaires, 172 questionnaires were received and being completed properly and 18 questionnaires were missing and total duration of gathering data was 26 days. The scale measured and evaluated on a five point scale with potential answers ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The finding of this research depicted that the majority of respondents like to use all four vocabulary learning strategies; direct strategy (memory strategy and cognitive strategy) and indirect strategy (meta-cognitive strategy and social strategy), except as for referring to English native speakers, the majority of respondents do not refer and speak to English speaker when they do not know a particular word, the reason do not be the lack of English speakers in northern Iraq. In this point teacher should encourage their students to be involved in English cultural events if it is possible, therefore; the teacher should use a social strategy which means cooperating with Proficient Users of the English-being friends with proficient speakers of English to enhance one's information of English vocabulary (Kafipour, 2011). Assisting and leading students learning vocabulary have a vital educational significance. It is understood that learning how to learn English vocabularyimproves students active participation in the process of obtaining the new vocabularies, raises their responsibility; student promotes thir independent or self-directed learning.'
